STUDY ON SEASONAL VARIATION OF PLASMA BUBBLE OCCURRENCES OBSERVED BY GPS SCINTILLATION AND AIRGLOW MEASUREMENTS OVER KOTOTABANG

With the increasing reliance on satellite-based positioning, navigation and timing systems on GNSS, predicting the plasma bubble occurrence is more and more demanded. This study aimed to characterize the impacts of ionospheric irregularities associated with plasma bubbles occurrences and scintillation on GNSS application during the declining solar activity. To reveal seasonal variation of ionospheric irregularities associated with plasma bubbles, we use an all-sky airglow imager (ASI) that are installed at Kototabang (0.2oS, 100.3oE, -10.4o magnetic latitude), Indonesia to detect large-scale plasma density depletions as two-dimensional images, the amplitude scintillation index (S4) obtained from three single-frequency GPS receivers installed at the same location and geomagnetic storm event (Dst index) obtained from the World Data Center for Geomagnetism, Kyoto. We analyzed the occurrence of plasma bubble in ASI images from 2003-2009 and found that the occurrence rate was highest during May-July than other months which is different from the seasonal variation of scintillation occurrences that were generally known so far. The high occurrence rate in May-July was not due to geomagnetic storms, because the statistics did not change after removing the plasma bubble events that may be caused by geomagnetic storms. We also studied the spatial relationship between the ionospheric scintillation and the large-scale plasma bubble structure seen in ASI images. We found some events where the ionospheric pierce points (IPPs) of the GPS satellites were inside the large-scale plasma bubble structure seen in ASI images without scintillation occurrence.
